Supporters of the bypass

The Kingskerswell Alliance accepts that there is support for the bypass, however when you examine where this support comes from, you can see the over riding consideration of these groups is to open up opportunities to develop land.

This can be seen when looking at the following extracts taken from the Economic Impact Study commissioned by Devon County Council. In the section looking at potential land development it comments: "Demand for business uses is moderate at best...." and continues "Demand for retail and housing sites is much stronger... but local development opportunities are limited by environmental and other constraints."

Now doesn't that give us a big clue what these bypass proposals are realy all about?

Below is a list of the main bodies to register their support for the scheme:

  • Torbay Council

  • Devon & Cornwall Business Council

  • The Federation of Small Businesses

  • The Freight Transport Association and

  • Torquay Chamber of Trade & Commerce.

Teignbridge District Council do support the scheme but this is qualified with 17 observations which include highlighting the need to address the current traffic conflict at Jury's Corner.

This is in fact a very important issue as the Kingskerswell Alliance argues there are cost effective alternatives to the bypass. High on the list of these options is the need for immediate action to resolve the situation at Jury's Corner. We are not engineers who can put forward detailed proposals, but we do call for an improved junction layout with either an underpass or foot bridge for the safety of pedestrians.

Other options include junction improvements at Penn Inn with better access to Shaldon Road. There is also a need for road widening and improvements to the St. Marychurch Road. The road from the top of Barton down to Kerswell Gardens and Riviera Way could be improved to discourage additional traffic using Barton Hill Road.

Now lets look at those groups who have expressed objections and concerns:
