Alternatives to the bypass

From its formation the Kingskerswell Alliance has campaigned for non road building solutions to manage the traffic on the A380 between Newton Abbot and Torquay. We believe that a series of smaller, economical, sustainable and environmentally friendly improvements, could be found to manage the traffic on the A380 through Kingskerswell village.

In 2008, leading transport consultants Steer Davies Gleave produced a brochure for us outlining alternatives to building a bypass which, in their opinion, are appropriate and which have proved effective elsewhere. The brochure is intended to show the sort of things which can be done, it is not a definitive list.Click the picture to view the brochure (pdf). Among other measures the brochure describes:

• A tunnel to take the traffic under the roundabout at Penn Inn
• Tidal flow along the A380 using LED road markings to avoid the use of gantries
• A pedestrian underpass at Jury's Corner
• A programme to encourage changes in the way we travel by offering choices
• Re opening the railway station at Kingskerswell
• Improving bus services, infrastructure and interchanges
