Bypass Fuels Overwhelming Opposition

Press Release June 5th 2007

The Kingskerswell Alliance claims there is strong public opposition against the Kingskerswell Bypass (aka South Devon Link Road) after they collected over 2000 signatures calling for it not to be built!  The Alliance collected signatures for the petition in the village and outside local shops and supermarkets

The signatures were gathered on a petition calling for a package of alternative measures to be used to solve congestion problems on the A380, instead of the proposed bypass.  The petition has now been handed to local MP Richard Younger-Ross who has kindly agreed to read it out in Parliament.

Chairman of the Kingskerswell Alliance, Ken Pegden said "Support for our petition has been overwhelming. When we explained to people exactly what was being proposed, the vast majority of people signed our petition"

And continued "At times people were queuing to sign. Devon County Council and Torbay Council have always maintained they had extensive support for the bypass scheme based on a questionnaire sent out 5 years ago, but that is certainly not what we have found when talking to people face to face"

The Alliance believes the petition represents current and up to date public opinion which shows opposition to the environmental destruction and the enormous cost of this controversial scheme.

The Alliance also claim the petition highlights that whilst people certainly wanted to see measures taken to reduce congestion, they realised that building more roads will just increase the amount of traffic in an already choked Torbay and add to the problems not reduce them.
