Devon County Council are being
accused by the Kingskerswell Alliance of trying to "pull the wool"
over everyone's eyes about the air quality issues linked to building the
Kingskerswell Bypass.
The Alliance claims that DCC voted through the
controversial planning application (in May 2006) by stating that air quality
would be improved. The same case was also made when the Authority presented
it's case to the South West Regional Assembly earlier this year in a bid to get
Government funding.
However one of DCC's own
reports [1] states there will be an 18% increase in Co2 emissions if the bypass
is built (due to increased traffic).
The Alliance Chairman Mr
Ken Pegden said "At a time when everybody else
is struggling to reduce greenhouse gases to meet Government targets, here we
have a scheme that is hugely damaging to the environment and increases Co2
emissions!"
It appears DCC have based
their case on the fact that an AQMA [2] in Kingskerswell will be assisted if
the bypass is built? However, the Alliance
points out that the environment at large will clearly suffer as a result.
Further more, the Alliance states that the
AQMA issues can be satisfactorily resolved by other more affordable measures to
reduce congestion on the A380.
